SWIFTLET BIRD’S NEST
The edible nest swiftlet Aerodamus fuciphagus is a small bird of the swift family which can be found in Southeast Asia. The edible-nest swiftlet feeds over a range of habitats from coastal areas to the mountains, occurring up to 2,800 metres above sea-level on Sumatra and Borneo. It diet consists of flying insects which are caught on the wing. It often feeds in large flocks with the other species of swiftlet and swallow. It breeds in colonies in caves, in a cleft in a cliff or sometimes on a building.
Swiftlet Breeding Cycle
1. The construction of the nest, made from sublingual gland. Literally takes nearly 1 ½ to 2 months to construct.
4. The chicks remain inside the nest for 6-8 weeks. Nest will only be collected once the chicks leave the nest.
